I recently came across an article in The Guardian about a person dealing with severe claustrophobia who was referred to a hypnotherapist by their GP. While it is fantastic to see medical professionals recommending hypnotherapy, what followed was deeply concerning: the client spent three solid months in “regression” sessions, digging through past memories to find a root cause before any actual therapeutic progress was made.

Spending months digging through the past is not only unnecessary, it can actively harm the client!

The Risks of Forced Regression

Obsessively searching for a “hidden secret” or a specific starting point runs two major risks:

  • Retraumatisation: Forcing someone to mentally relive terrifying events, abuse, or panic is the last thing a healing space should do.
  • False Memories: High-pressure regression runs a high risk of planting false memories—an issue documented extensively since the 1980s.

While knowing the origin of a fear can occasionally be interesting, the truth is simple: you do not need to know where, when, or why a phobia started in order to be free of it.

A Faster, Safer Way Forward

Therapy should focus on where you are now and where you want to go, without dragging you back into painful events.

Through modern hypnotherapy and “content-free” techniques, we can resolve the brain’s automated fight-or-flight response without needing to dissect the specific details of your past. You don’t have to explain every detail, and you certainly don’t have to relive your worst moments to find relief.

The vast majority of phobias and anxiety issues can be resolved rapidly, often in just a few sessions, and in some cases, a single session is enough. The process should be efficient, gentle, and can even be an enjoyable, empowering experience.

Of course, when dealing with more severe trauma and PTSD, most people will need a few more sessions. But the aim remains the same: move forward as rapidly as you can and start living your life!
